16 Pirates Of The Caribbean Easter Eggs You Probably Missed

5. The Classic Swash-buckling Movie References

Despite the fact that making pirate films was once considered box office poison, Pirates Of The Caribbean knew its heritage when it came to breathe new life into the genre, as evident in the many references to nautical classics.

The sequence that sees Will and Sparrow use a boat to walk underwater is clearly a reference to The Crimson Pirate, and Will's surf down a sail in Dead Man's Chest is about as iconic a pirate movie cliche as there's ever been, having first appeared in The Black Pirate in 1926.

Elsewhere, Pintel's over-use of "Poppet" in regard to Elizabeth could well be a reference to The Spanish Main - a classic pirate-themed love triangle film starring Maureen O'Hara.
