1. You Can't Work Out How You Actually Feel About Film Anymore
You've been exposed to film for so long, and in such high quantities, that it's hard to actually know how you feel about the medium anymore: you can't live without it, but you can't escape the feeling that ALL MOVIES ARE THE SAME, or ALL MOVIES ARE TERRIBLE, or that THE MEDIUM IS FLAWED or that YOU'RE LIVING A LIE. Have you seen every possible story ever told, already? What day is it? What's the capital of Montana? Hello? Case in point: critic David Thomson, who become disillusioned with motion pictures due to an intense and rather terrifying overexposure that eventually began to suck away his life force, has confessed that his love affair with movies was darkened when he felt he had taken in all the medium had to offer, had been witness to all its trappings and tricks. Thomson later admitted he prefers novels... and now views them as a far superior medium. So beware. Because being a film buff presumably means that there's a huge chance that it will end this way for us - our love for film might, in fact, destroy our love for it, too. And yet for those of us who truly are film buffs - for those who cannot live our lives in any other way - we have no choice. It might not be easy, but it's what it is. Like this article?
