2. The Great Wall

The Great Wall Matt Damon
Universal

A fantasy epic about Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, Oberyn from Game of Thrones and a whole lot of Chinese people defending the Great Wall of China from a fleet of grotesque monsters is...exactly what you expect.

Plot and character amount to little, and Matt Damon's shamelessly collecting a fat paycheck here, but Hero director Zhang Yimou makes the most of his $150 million budget, crafting an hilariously OTT, action-packed spectacle of fantasy nonsense.

Written with little flair but executed with sure stylistic panache, it is the definition of a style-over-substance film, hoping to distract with a neat bag of tricks even though the script exits the brain as fast as it enters. It basically works.
