The Book of Henry is destined to be remembered for years as a so-bad-it's-good classic of Oscar-bait cinema.

Widely expected to be an awards contender until critics got their mitts on it, Colin Trevorrow's coming-of-age drama thinks it's an affecting movie about life, death, revenge and moving on, but it's really a sublimely creepy and contrived film about the baffling behaviour of a mother (Naomi Watts) in light of her son's death.

That act three culminates in her nearly murdering her suspected child molester neighbour with a sniper rifle before coming to her senses is all that needs to be said about how fundmentally misguided the film is on a tonal and general cinematic level.

It may be terrible, but it's also compulsively watchable in its weirdness, a flaming dumpster fire onboard a trainwreck that's impossible to look away from.
