17 Things You Didn't Know About Austin Powers

8. Lawsuit With MGM Threatened Franchise

In January 2002 a crisis was brewing in the Austin Powers franchise. The third film of the trilogy Austin Powers in Goldmember was scheduled for release on July 26, 2002. In January all promotional material for the film: posters, trailers, online presence were removed due to a lawsuit brought on by MGM. MGM, the studio that held the rights to the Bond franchise, obtained a cease-and-desist order from the Motion Picture Association of America arbitration panel claiming that New Line Cinema was trying to cash in on the James Bond franchise with no permission from the rights holders. The lawsuit was eventually settled on the 11 April 2002 with the agreement stating that the Austin Powers films had to get permission from MGM for any James Bond parody titles in future and to attach the trailer of Die Another Day to all cinematic showings of Goldmember. Until the lawsuit was resolved all promotional material simply referenced to Goldmember being the third film of the Austin Powers series and not by its actual name.
