18 Absolute Weirdest Movies In Existence

1. Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders

Jaromil Jireš's Czechoslovakian surrealist classic is perhaps one of the most underrated movies appearing on this list - at the same time, with its evocative dream-states and lyrical style, it's undoubtedly one of the best, featuring some truly mesmerizing sequences which transport the viewer deep inside the mind of its 13-year-old protagonist, Valerie, as she experiences her week of wonders. Strange priests make unwanted advances in the dead of night; lesbians frolic by a waterfall; a mysterious masked man glides amongst a wedding procession as the eponymous heroine flits between reality and fantasy; realms replete with religious iconography turned on its head and a range of eccentric archetypal characters. By turns achingly beautiful and disturbing, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is weird cinema at its best - cryptic, ambiguous and subversive, it's as a coming-of-age fable unlike any other.
