18 Crucial Questions For 2015's Most Anticipated Movies
10. Is Ant-Man Marvel Studios' First Critical & Commercial Failure?
Release Date: July 17th The production of Marvel's Ant-Man has been rocky to say the least: Edgar Wright spent close to a decade trying to bring his vision to the screen, and when he finally got close, creative differences with Marvel led to him bailing from the project, being replaced by relatively inexperienced action director Peyton Reed. Even ignoring this and an extremely tight production schedule (filming didn't start until mid-August), the actual creative aspect of making an Ant-Man movie is undeniably challenging: to sell to audiences a guy who can shrink himself and command an army of insects is going to be a tough one indeed. Verdict: Still, this is Marvel Studios, the company that managed to make close to $800 million from a movie that, with a talking raccoon and tree monsters, had no business making that much money. At least Ant-Man benefits from the likes of Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in lead roles, and of course, that Marvel Studios name is basically a license to print money these days. In short, even if Wright saw the writing on the wall and it turns out to be a critical flop, it'll almost certainly still turn a decent profit.
