18 Crucial Questions For 2016's Most Anticipated Movies
9. Can Alice Through The Looking Glass Gross Another $1 Billion?
The Question: After 2010's Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland grossed an astonishing $1.025 billion, can this 2016 follow-up, directed by The Muppets' James Bobin and seeing the majority of the original's cast returning, pull off the same billion-plus box-office coup? The Likely Answer: Not a chance in hell. Even ignoring the fact that the film is coming far too long after the original, the hype machine on this one is completely through the floor with less than five months to go until the movie's release. Yes, that's plenty of time to pull off a saturated marketing campaign, but it's hard not to feel like without Tim Burton at the helm and a cast who pretty much look like they were contractually obliged to return, why would audiences flock to it in the same numbers again? It probably won't be a flop, but at the same time, don't be shocked if it grosses only around half of what Burton's film did.
