2. Edgar Wright – Zombies Party Bargain Bin DVD
As the second instalment in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy – after 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and followed by The World’s End in 2013 – it makes sense that Hot Fuzz would reference its predecessor.
There are, in fact, there are several recurring themes throughout the trilogy including Nick Frost’s character’s uncanny knack for foreshadowing and a running gag about taking shortcuts and fences. But there’s a blink and you’ll miss it reference in Hot Fuzz to Shaun of the Dead, the breakthrough film that really put Wright on the map in the form of a bargain bin DVD.
In a scene where Simon Pegg’s policeman Nicholas is chasing a shoplifter in a supermarket, the camera cuts to a distracted Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) checking out the bargain bin offerings and we briefly see a DVD titled ‘Zombies Party’.
Zombies Party just so happens to be the English translation of the title Shaun of the Dead was released under in Spain and Portugal. And it’s a steal at just £4.99.
