18 Insanely Messed Up Movies You Might Not Be Able To Handle

8. Irreversible

The House That Jack Built
Mars

This one is another poster-child for messed up, controversial movies and it comes from Gaspar Noe, a notorious and talented cinematic provocateur. Irreversible centres around the brutal rape of Alex (Monica Bellucci) and her boyfriend's attempts to track down and kill her attacker, but the story is shown in reverse chronological order.

Irreversible is one of those movies that hardly anyone will ever re-watch. The horrible rape scene literally lasts for almost ten minutes and there's an infamous scene in which a man who tries to rape one of the two male protagonists has his head crushed by a fire extinguisher in Very graphic detail. You see his head disappear chunk by gory chunk.

It's not only a brutal movie, but it's a very sad one. The way in which the film is presented in reverse order makes everything about it feel incredibly hopeless and the conclusion (or rather, beginning as presented in the film's timeline) is very nihilistic, especially since the man who raped Alex gets away with everything.

Irreversible is a good movie with strong directing, impressive performances and an interesting exploration of time, but due to the graphic violence, depressing tone and occasionally headache-inducing shaky-cam cinematography, it's not an easy watch.
