18 More Things You Didn't Know About The Terminator
8. I... Will Be Back?
The Terminator only has 16 lines, (14 of which are spoken by Arnold Schwarzenegger). Despite his vocal limitations, Arnie made his character one of the most famous movie villains of the 1980s. To highlight the character's autonomous nature as much as possible, the Terminator doesn't use contractions when he speaks. (A contraction is a shortened version of a word or phrase e.g. "We've" is a contraction of "we have").
Bizarrely, the Terminator only uses one contraction in the entire film... and it happens to be for his most famous line, "I'll be back". Even though this went on to become one of the most popular movie catchphrases of all time, Arnie didn't want to say it. He argued that he should phrase it as, "I will be back" to sound more robotic. (Many years later, Arnie admitted the real reason why he didn't want to say this line is because he had difficulty pronounce "I'll" without sounding feminine).
When he made his concerns to James Cameron, the director said," I don't tell you how to act, and you don't tell me how to write." It worked out in the end since a variation of the catchphrase has been used in every entry in the series.
