A short yet effective moment, this particular scene in the sequel to the Guardians of the Galaxy was surprising in its sadness.

Mantis, who at this point is still in service to Ego, sits with Drax the Destroyer in front of the ornate doors to Ego's home. Drax calls Mantis ugly, at first shocking her, before assuring her that it's good to be ugly, as ugly people know that when they are loved, that those who love them are honest, and have nothing to hide.

He then goes on to talk about how Mantis reminds him of his daughter. How she was innocent, and how the beautiful fountains in front of them reminds him of the lakes he used to bring her to back on his home planet.

As Drax looks over the beauty of Ego's planet, thinking of his family, Mantis touches his arm and bursts into uncontrollable, sobbing tears, even as Drax smiles serenely on.

Though the scene cuts away quickly, it's a remarkably painful revelation of just how much suffering and loss Drax carries with him, and how well he's become accustomed to carrying it that he can smile through it all.
