1. The Interview Gets Temporarily Pulled From Theatrical Release, Ends Up On VOD
Following threats from hackers that cinemas screening the controversial comedy The Interview could be targeted, most of America's major cinema chains decided against screening the film, leading to mass outrage as those keen to see the movie and proponents of free speech condemned the cinema chains for their cowardly behaviour. Sony later confirmed that the release had been scrapped entirely, and while some cinemas attempted to show Team America: World Police instead as a protest, Paramount Pictures refused to allow this, again causing much anger online. Eventually, Sony announced a limited release of the movie on Christmas Day in over 300 cinemas, while The Interview was also made available on VOD for the low price of $5.99 the day before. Impressively, the movie has already made $15 million in VOD revenue for Sony, making it their highest-grossing online release to date, and a testament to the power of day-and-date distribution.
