12. Gamora Gets Sidelined - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
The Film
Though it didn't quite meet the high standards of the first Guardians, Vol. 2 was for the most part a highly entertaining - if slightly complacent - follow-up, making good on its talented cast and spritely visuals, not to mention Kurt Russell's effortlessly superior villain, Ego. Not all the jokes land and it lacks the vibrant edge of the original, but still a damn fun time.
The Moment
One of the biggest complaints about the first Guardians movie was that the female lead, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), was curiously sidelined and felt more like a supporting straight-man rather than a front-line member of the team.
Oddly, James Gunn basically doubled down on this for Vol. 2, and aside from her North by Northwest-inspired battle with estranged sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora had very little of substance to do here.
The romance with Peter feels even more ham-fisted, the fact she's relentlessly stern and serious is frustrating, and the sibling rivalry mostly feels rehashed from the first film without much added depth.
Fingers crossed Vol. 3 finally gives her the comamnding role she clearly deserves, but don't count on it.
