11. Kevin O'Connell Finally Wins An Oscar On His 21st Nomination

To regular Oscar viewers, sound mixer Kevin O'Connell is something of an awards night legend, having been nicknamed "Oscar's biggest loser" for his 20 nominations without a win since 1984.

Despite La La Land being expected to scoop the Best Sound Mixing Oscar (as musicals often do), O'Connell finally won the gong on his 21st nomination for his work on Hacksaw Ridge, to the considerable delight of the Internet.

By this point O'Connell's bad luck at the Oscars had become something mythic, and to see the streak broken so spectacularly resulted in arguably the most crowd-pleasing moment of the whole night.

It sure didn't hurt that O'Connell seemed so grateful for the win and touchingly paid tribute to his late mother in closing out his speech. And when asked backstage how it felt to win? He simply said, "It's the greatest feeling in my entire life."
