With the sheer amount of people that Tolkien writes about, all of them are affected by the battle of Middle Earth at Minas Tirith. Imagine how annoyed you'd be if you didn't find out what happened to Frodo and the rest of the Shire even though their sole purpose for being a part of the Fellowship was to save it? Or if Aragorn didn't get crowned, you would probably hunt down Viggo Mortensen and present him with a crown that you made yourself out of tin foil. In other words, every single one of the endings is entirely necessary.
