Plot: Two lighthouse keepers, stranded on their small island, descend into insanity.

The Lighthouse is one of those horror movies that messes with your head and makes you feel so intensely unsettled that, despite its brilliance, once it ends it's almost a relief. Comparisons to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining are more than justified here.

Thanks to the terrifying brilliance of its cinematography, soundtrack, sound design and production design, The Lighthouse is an exceptionally disturbing and frightening movie that is about as mad as horror cinema gets. It's also got two fantastic performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson and the ambivalent relationship that develops between their characters is superbly done.

Thanks to the many complex ways in which it can be interpreted and Robert Eggers' wonderfully detailed approach, The Lighthouse only gets better the deeper you go. Sure, it might be incredibly disturbing and mess around with your head like a worm in your brain, but it's also a very rewarding horror film that's well worth getting lost in.
