20 'Controversial' Movies Everyone Completely Over-Reacted To

11. Team America World Police

Team America Sex Scene
Paramount Pictures

The Film:

A feature comedy by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, which sees an anti-terrorism force fight against North Korea, as well as many of Hollywood's biggest stars in a foul-mouthed, sexually explicit and insanely gory spectacle. Oh, and everyone in it is a marionette.

The Controversy:

The film's lengthy sex scene had to be cut down to get an R rating and its rude humor and explicit content offended many. The actors parodied in the film had mixed reactions. Kim Jong-il, who is the film's villain, never actually commented on his depiction in the film, but he probably saw it as he was a huge film buff. North Korea did ask Czechoslovakia to ban the film, but they refused to.

Why It Was Wrong:

Wow, everyone seriously over-reacted to this movie. The thing is, compared to many episodes of South Park, this is pretty tame. Everyone was making fun of America's foreign policy at the time.

What's most inexplicable is that everyone was so offended by the hilarious puppet sex scene. It is strange how censors get so offended by sexual content but are more lenient towards graphic violence. South Park has taken aim at this to hilarious effect in many of its episodes.

Finally, there's the matter of quality. Team America doesn't really hold up and it lacks the genius of South Park. It's essentially a one joke movie and there's no need to get so angry just because some marionettes are being naughty.
