The Film:

The highly entertaining third Iron Man solo film, released back in 2013, was the first MCU film following The Avengers. It was co-written and directed by Shane Black.

The Controversy:

The film was mostly liked, but there was a huge backlash in regards to one twist. The Mandarin seen in the marketing (Ben Kingsley) is actually a crude British actor, while Guy Pearce's character is the real villain using Kingsley's character as a cover. Comic book fans were absolutely enraged that this beloved villain had been reduced to a joke in this way.

Why It Was Wrong:

The Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3 was absolutely brilliant. It was incredibly funny and Ben Kingsley did a fabulous job. It was also such a fun subversion of our expectations and it was the greatest scene in the entire movie.

It is entirely understandable that people felt annoyed at this change to the source material. However, there is one thing all of us fan-boys and fan-girls need to remember for all of our fandoms: it's not our movie. It is someone else interpreting the source in their vision. Sure, the changes might be unsettling but does it really matter that much?

This particular case is an example of an increasing problem in the age of the internet: toxic fandoms attacking movies. A similar thing has been seen recently with The Last Jedi. However, this case was so ridiculous considering how funny the joke was.
