20 Action Films From The 1990s You Must Watch

4. Independence Day (1996)

Hard Boiled John Woo
20th Century Fox

Independence Day is widely regarded as the film that changed Hollywood blockbusters forever, as it led to a revival of disaster and sci-fi movies and started the trend of using the Super Bowl air time as a way to kick off the advertising campaign for potential blockbusters.

The film focuses on various groups of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a worldwide alien attack. In order to give the people of earth a fighting chance during their worldwide counterattack on July 4th, satellite technician David Levinson, played by Jeff Goldblum, and cocky squadron leader Captain Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith, must plant a virus into the alien mothership in order to take down their ships shields.

The film delivered a thrilling experience that has now become the norm for all major blockbusters, courtesy of its catchy one-liners, intense action and wonderful practical effects that have aged beautifully. It also doesn’t hurt that Goldblum and Smith worked off of each other brilliantly and that Bill Pullman gave one of the most stirring speeches in any action film.
