20 Action Movies You Must See Before You Die

9. True Lies (1994)

There was no way that we'd compile a list like this without mentioning an Arnie movie, though we stuck to our guns and decided to only include one. Many will be shocked at the fact that both Commando and Predator are missing from the list, but we decided to be a little more original and opted for James Cameron's True Lies instead. One of Cameron's lesser known works - if there is such a thing - stars Schwarzenegger as the questionably named hero Harry Tasker, who leads a double life as a secret agent in this twisty picture based on a French flick called La Totale!. True Lies isn't a perfect movie by any means, but the sheer craftsmanship on show here earns it a place on the list regardless. Looking at the explosive action scenes scattered throughout this 141 minute thrill ride (and it's a credit to Cameron that it doesn't lag for a single second), it's no wonder that True Lies was - at the time it was made - the most expensive film of all-time. The body count is high, the set-pieces are inventive in that way that only James Cameron seems to be able to pull off time and time again, and it's so just much fun. There is also a firefight involving a jet, so there.
