Arguably Quentin Tarantino’s most frantically paced film, Kill Bill Vol. 1 plundered everything from the Shaw Brothers' back catalogue to Manga movies, telling an otherwise simple story with the manic invention that is Tarantino’s trademark.

Critics who wondered where the dialogue and characterisation had gone were rewarded by this sequel, which slows the pace down to spend more time with its characters. They turn out to be a typically colourful bunch, led by Michael Madsen as Budd, who went from Bill’s death squad to bouncing drunks in a titty bar.

Highlights include Uma Thurman’s fight with Daryl Hannah and Gordon Liu’s extended cameo as Pai Mei, whose tutelage gives our heroine the means to escape after being buried alive. Kudos also for revealing what parents have known all along - that Shogun Assassin is the perfect kids' film.
