20 Actor Nationalities You've Been Getting Wrong All Your Life

6. Joaquin Phoenix

"Joaquin Phoenix... I mean, this guy was probably born on another planet or something, right? Great actor, of course, and he was awesome in Gladiator and The Master, but for all I know Joaquin Phoenix came out of an inter-dimension portal. He is not of this world." He totally is! Joaquin Phoenix holds American citizenship, but he was actually born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and he lived there until he was six-years-old (his parents were American, see). His real surname, you'll probably be amused to know, is "Bottom." So have a ruddy good laugh about that, won't you?

5. Christian Bale

"Christian Bale's odd, transatlantic accent is somewhat irritating, and this guy seems to switch voices on a whim - not just in movies, but during interviews, too, when he's supposed to be talking in whatever that excuse for a real accent is. Make up your mind, Christian - where are you from? You're English, right? That's what I heard once." Almost there... Christian Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, in the UK. But his parents were South African and English. "I was born in Wales but I'm not Welsh €“ I'm English." So make what you will out of all that, then: it's just as confusing as his accent.
