Almost was: Star Lord Lee Pace could soon become known for his extremely melodramatic turns as genre villains. His Thranduil in The Hobbit, while not an out and out baddie, was a proper sneerer who left us wondering why the scenery of the ornate wood elf castle didn't have more teeth marks. Guardians' Ronan The Accuser, a vengeful Kree on the brink of insanity, was likewise sneering, but this time it was matched with the means to wreak havoc. He defies Thanos for titan's sake; that's pretty massive. So Pace did have a memorable role in Guardians, but he originally was in the running for something a little more permanent; he not only auditioned for the role of Peter Quill, but got a screen test. This is a similar situation as to what happened with Loki - Tom Hiddleston originally auditioned for Thor - although we find it a lot easy to imagine Pace as Star Lord.
