Carano was originally a mixed martial arts fighter who post-retirement appeared on American Gladiators and a few shlocky action films, but didn't find film fame until Steven Soderbergh gave her a high-profile vehicle in the form of the star-studded Haywire. An appearance as The Rock's assistant in Fast And Furious 6 followed and, in early 2013 Carano's name, along with a couple of others, was banded around for the role of Gamora. Saldana did a good job in the film of doing the intense action and her slight physique acted as a good mirror to her 'sister' Nebula, but Carano, with her MMA history could have been even more formidable.
