Though you'd be forgiven for assuming that football-shaped droid BB-8's "voice" was simply generated artificially in a synthesiser, it actually had a significant human influence, with J.J. Abrams bringing in two beloved comedy actors to figure things out.

Parks and Recreation's Ben Schwartz and the great Bill Hader were employed as "vocal consultants" for BB-8, which amounted to recording voiceover for the droid which would then be transcoded into a droid "voice" for the final film. Hader said of his contribution to the film:

"JJ f**king around with this sound effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me. It looked ridiculous but it made BB-8's voice. At first I tried doing a voice, but we all agreed it sounded too human."
