20 Alternative 2017 Movie Awards

12. Worst Remake, Reboot or Reimagining - The Mummy

2017 Movie Awards 2
Universal Pictures

With the future of the Dark Universe now up in the air and Universal facing two failed reboots of their iconic monsters in three years, it seems that they have finally learned what everyone already knew; rebooting horror characters in star-driven action blockbusters was a terrible idea.

Director Alex Kurtzman was woefully unprepared to handle the production, especially with the notoriously hands-on and incredibly influential Tom Cruise in the lead role. What could have been a stripped-down genre piece that established the Dark Universe as an alternative to the glut of comic book movies instead became a generic Tom Cruise Action Movie that just happened to feature a mummy.

As Universal once again go back to the drawing board and with the fate of Bill Condon's Bride of Frankenstein, Johnny Depp's Invisible Man, The Wolfman and more still yet to be officially decided, the studio should remember what made these characters icons in the first place. With the right talent they could make twice the movie for half the cost, which should have been the idea in the first place.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
