20 Amazing Facts About All About Eve
1. The Film Had A Very Impressive Run At The Oscars
All About Eve has a very interesting relationship with the Oscars.
For starters, it still holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations – a total of fourteen, tied with Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016). It won six of those fourteen nominations.
It also holds a second record for most female acting nominations in a single film with four: Bette Davis and Anne Baxter for ‘Best Actress’ and Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. To this day, no other film can claim this record. Ironically, none of these nominated women went on to win in their respective categories.
Many argue Davis would have had a greater chance of succeeding if Baxter wasn’t in the same category as her. Furthermore, they were both competing against Gloria Swanson for her role in “Sunset Boulevard”, which is often hailed as one of the greatest performances of all time. It is believed the vote was largely split between the three which is the why the Best Actress award went to ‘underdog’ nominee Judy Holliday.
Despite no succeeding female cast members, George Sanders did receive the award for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’. And All About Eve also took home the big one – the Oscar for Best Picture. It was thoroughly deserved too.
