20 Amazing Facts About All About Eve
12. The Sarah Siddons Award Was Made Up Specifically For All About Eve
The Sarah Siddons Award actually started off as fictional. It was invented by Mankiewicz specifically for All About Eve and can be seen depicted at the beginning and the end of the film.
In 1952, it inspired a small group of avid theatre goers to create the real-life Sarah Siddons Award – presented annually to an actor for an outstanding performance in a Chicago theatrical production. A lot of the All About Eve alumni went on to receive the award, including Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Celeste Holm and the Broadway’s Lauren Bacall who played Margo in "Applause".
Bette Davis also won the award in 1973. As a surprise, the organisers asked Anne Baxter to attend the presentation. Far from pleased, Davis was furious to share the limelight with her former co-star.
