20 Awesome 2014 Movies You Might've Missed

7. Cold In July

The Plot: Following a home invasion in which he killed the intruder, Richard (Michael C. Hall) and his family are targeted by the man's father, Ben (Sam Shepard), yet before long both find themselves teaming up along with private investigator Jim Bob Luke (Don Johnson) to get to the bottom of the situation. Why It's Awesome: Jim Mickle's visually stunning, beautifully scored and superbly-acted modern day film noir thrills from first minute to last, soaked in suspense as the central mystery only becomes more transfixing. The tone of the piece doesn't always seem to fit, but that's a small complaint in a movie which is both hilarious and grimly violent. The three central performances are all stellar, especially Johnson, who provides some much-needed comic relief to all the bloodshed. How To Watch It: On DVD now (US & UK)
