The Plot: A sprawling examination of the quest for fame and fortune in one Hollywood family, complete with all the drug use, haunted memories and overwhelming disappointment that this invites. Why It's Awesome: Easily David Cronenberg's best film in years, Maps to the Stars is an angry, acidic satire of Hollywood's tendency to churn ambitious people up and spit them out, delivering its message with sledgehammer force. Julianne Moore gives a superb performance in the lead role, as a washed-up middle-aged actress, while Mia Wasikowska is also excellent as a scarred young woman trying to reconnect with her family. Though extremely dark, there's also a ton of sick gallows humour here, making it a delightful treat for those intrigued by the vacuous nature of Hollywood.
