1. Life Itself

The Plot: An affectionate, comprehensive examination of the life and times of Roger Ebert, the world's most famous film critic, who passed away in early 2013. Why It's Awesome: Legendary documentarian Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters) does a fantastic job providing a well-rounded portrait of his central figure, not just praising his superb critical abilities but also delving deep into the man's flaws and often irascible demeanour. Even so, it's hard not to be won over by his spirit and his love for movies, both of which absolutely shine through in spades here.
