20 Awesome 2014 Movies You Might've Missed

17. The Skeleton Twins

The Plot: Following a suicide attempt, failed actor actor Milo (Bill Hader) is visited by his estranged, similarly suicidal sister Maggie (Kristen Wiig), and together they attempt to work through their issues or at least find a reliable way to deal with them. Why It's Awesome: A thorny dramatic comedy which will simply be too sour and grim for some tastes, The Skeleton Twins nevertheless succeeds because it wrings so much honesty out of its premise, thanks to pin-sharp, superbly authentic performances from the two leads. Avoiding the usual dramatic traps for the most part (though the ending is a slight misstep), there's humanity here to spare, and Hader in particular gives a career-changing turn as a man living on the edge.
