The Plot: Trans sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is released from prison, only to learn that her boyfriend and pimp, Chester (James Ransone), has been unfaithful. Along with her similarly trans pal Alexandra (Mya Taylor), she angrily runs across Hollywood in pursuit of her unfaithful lover. Why It's Awesome: Yes, this may be the film that was shot entirely on an iPhone 5, but it would be unfair to reduce Tangerine to just that. With his latest effort, Sean S. Baker (Starlet) has pretty much become the new John Waters, serving up a hilariously weird dramedy that's like nothing else out there. What really makes this one tick is the central performances from Rodriguez and Taylor, who were both nominated for Independent Spirit Awards for their ground-breaking work, making it clear that trans roles can in fact actually be played by trans people (looking at you here, The Danish Girl). It's rough around the edges for sure, but this only adds to its charm and the feeling of authenticity, no matter how profoundly weird it is.
