The Plot: Geeky teenager Malcolm (Shameik Moore) has his entire life ahead of him until he finds himself and his pals accidentally drawn into a world of drug dealing and violence after one fateful night. Why It's Awesome: Rick Famuyiwa's (The Wood, Brown Sugar) latest takes the urban teen crime flicks we've become accustomed to over the years and completely flips them on their heads, presenting a protagonist who subverts typical categorisation and a narrative that feels fresh and of-the-moment. Moore gives what's sure to be a career-making performance in the lead role, but most impressively, the film manages to be uproariously funny while also fashioning a genuinely suspenseful crime thriller narrative. This has cult hit written all over it: just wait and see.
