OrionIf parents found themselves a little concerned over the level of violence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, they'd have been mortified if they'd realised just how gruesome and gory RoboCop was - precisely the reason why many of us watched it surreptitiously, finger poised over the stop button in case mum or dad walked into the room. RoboCop was the 80s movie which showed us just how over the top an action movie could be; the benchmark for violence which few other movies matched. It's doubtful that many of us grasped the wonderful satire and themes of authoritarianism in a world where capitalism has gone mad and crime is rampant, but none of that really matters when you're watching a cool cyborg shooting the crap out of bad guys. Watching Officer Murphy being brutally gunned down by Clarence Bodickers (an excellent Kurtwood Smith) and his gang probably gave us nightmares, but his revival as RoboCop and eventual revenge had us transfixed to the screen utterly amazed by what we were seeing. Ultra violence has never been so much fun, not to mention the fact that RoboCop taught us all to "stay out of trouble!"
