Much as a horror film based on Tarot cards might seem like it's scraping the bottom of the conceptual barrel, at least last year's Tarot had a fun central idea - have the various "characters" from the Tarot deck manifest in the real world and start killing people.

While most of the murderous entities didn't move the needle much, there was one notable exception - The Fool.

When Paxton (Jacob Batalon), who drew the Fool card at the start of the film, is heading home one night, he finds himself stalked by it.

After Paxton flees to the apparent safety of his dorm building, he rides the elevator up to his floor, but when the door opens the Fool is right there, waiting for him at the end of the dark hallway.

Paxton then watches in fear as the Fool contorts its way along the hall towards him, cackling and whistling before its face changes in rapid succession numerous times, and then it finally appears to kill the poor lad.

Even accepting that Paxton is actually revealed to have survived at film's end, placing a stale cherry on top of this generally wretched PG-13 horror, the Fool at least was genuinely chilling for a hot minute.

From its legitimately brilliant masks and costume to its eerie playfulness and the skin-crawling physical performance from Felix Leech, the Fool deserved a much, much better movie.

Tarot performed well enough at the box office that a sequel could happen, and if it does, here's hoping it gives the Fool stronger material.
