20 Baffling IMDb Top 250 Placements You Won't Believe

9. The Secret In Their Eyes

Interstellar Cooper
Sony Pictures Classics

The Film:

A crime drama from Argentina, which won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and also spawned a failed American remake.

Placement: #135

Why It's Wrong:

This one really makes little sense. In terms of recent films of world cinema: Let the Right One In, Victoria and The Great Beauty. Those are 3 utterly awesome recent foreign films which aren't on the Top 250. Yet somehow not only did this make it on, but it's also nearly at the halfway point. That is ridiculous.

Aside from when comparing it to the ill-fated American remake, it's hard to remember the last time anyone really spoke about this movie. It's harder still to see why it even became so popular in the first place. Aside from the brilliant one-take stadium scene and the twist ending, there is very little to remember in this film, which more often than not feels like a feature length detective TV drama.

Aside from the political and historical context, there's little to set this apart from other, similar movies. That's not to say that this film is bad; far from it. It's a very serviceable and competent movie. But it just doesn't live up to the hype and thus doesn't justify being rated as one of the top 150 films ever made.

Where It Should Be: Either #230-#250, or not at all. Preferably the latter.
