20 Behind-The-Scenes Facts From The Hunger Games

18. The Dangers Of Catching Fire’s Water

As the tributes meet the arena in Catching Fire, the first thing they see is water — and lots of it. A swimming contest to the Cornucopia is soon underway, followed by an ocean-bound battle, and Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick have to take the plunge to rid themselves of poison-inflicted wounds. That’s a lot of water!

The filming for all of these scenes took their toll on Jennifer Lawrence, our beloved Katniss actor. She reported suffering a burst eardrum after enduring the water through all of the takes, which left her partially deaf in one ear for weeks afterwards.

This is not the first time a movie has damaged the ears of its actors; Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe suffered two ear infections whilst filming for the Goblet of Fire. Water is more dangerous than we first expected!

That being said, Lawrence’s injury is certainly a strange coincidence. An explosion in the first Hunger Games book inflicts Katniss with the exact same wound, with a burst eardrum rendering her deaf in one ear too until Capitol medicine patches her up. You know what they say: like character like actor.
