The watchword of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy is "realism". The director's Batman films are all about exploring how exactly Bruce Wayne would operate by the rules of real life (just about), with military-grade tech, a punishing exercise regime for Christian Bale that mirrors his character's transformation, and a Joker who acted like an actual psychopath. Most of that went out the window by the time of The Dark Knight Rises, with Tom Hardy making his debut as the gorilla-mask-faced, indeterminably accented mercenary Bane. Even when the realism was lost, the battles between Bane and Batman were genuinely brutal...until you see the photos of the filming of those scenes, and the "DERP" faces Bale made during them.
