20. This Is 40
Described as a "sort-of sequel" to Knocked Up, given that it features two of that movie's secondary characters as its leads, This Is 40 was met with mixed reception upon first realise. But one can't help but think that said reviews were a little on the harsh side, especially given that - for the most part - Judd Apatow's semi-sequel proved entertaining. No, it doesn't come close to the genius of the film it was spun from, but who honestly expected it to? The film's plot hones in on "set in their ways" couple Paul and Debbie, both played brilliantly by the likes of Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann (Apatow's real life wife, don't you know?). There's no a driving narrative, as such; the movie is more meandering in nature, as it explores the trials and tribulations of life at 40 - family, friends, sex, the whole package. Yes, for an Apatow movie, This Is 40 is a little underwhelming throughout; still, as far as comedy sequels go, this is - at least - a successful attempt to do something different. And though there are clear moments of indulgence (Apatow's actual kids play Paul and Debbie's kids, for example), there's enough funny to warrant a viewing. Also: Megan Fox.
