19. Spencer 'Big Daddy' Bennett- Django Unchained
Aside from looking like a younger and more charming version of Colonel Sanders, there isnt much to like or praise about Big Daddy. Sure, he comes across as charming, but the fact that this man's luxurious lifestyle and wealth is earned off the back of the many slaves he owns on his plantation, not to mention the fact that he employs the detestable Brittle Brothers, means that though he is not up there with the likes of Calvin Candie or Stephen for the winner of most despicable character in Django, there is still no doubt that he is a blatant racist and doesnt see Django or any of his slaves as equal to himself. However, it is with this character, along with Jonah Hills brief yet unforgettable appearance in the film, that Tarantino crafts the most hilarious scene of his career, and one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. The set up of the scene is that Django and Dr. King Schultz have just killed all three Brittle Brothers, to the obvious dislike of Big Daddy. Big Daddys plan for revenge is for himself and his fellow racists to disguise themselves, in similar head ware to that of the Klu Klux Klan, and to savagely beat, torture and kill both Django and Schultz. Though Spencers threat is filled with malice and hate, and the scenario of white racists hunting down a slave is a very serious one, and a very real reflection of what life was like in the south at the time, Tarantino manages to undermine these ignorant men by presenting them as morons who cant even successfully cut eye holes into a bag. Instead of these men appearing fierce and a dangerous force, they come across as fools, and are easily defeated by Django and Schultz. Spencer makes it onto this list as without his pompous and racist character being undermined so brilliantly by Tarantino, Django would be missing one of its best scenes.
