One of the more obscure ladies on this list - and the only one outside of our 2000AD characters not to wear a Judge's badge - Tank Girl is the British female answer to Mad Max. The 1995 adaptation of Jamie Hewlett's cult creation doesn't have the best reputation, but nor is it entirely deserving of a bad one either.

Lori Petty, at peak awesomeness, is the titular girl with a tank fetish, battling sinister corporation leader Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell), livening up the post-apocalyptic world she lives in with punk verve and smarts. The film (and, yes, Tank Girl herself) may be a little irritating at times, but she's one of the most original, unusual heroines on this list... and drives a tank, too.
