Martin Scorsese has been amongst the best for the past five decades now - he's just that good - but like with Spielberg him appearing on this list isn't just a legacy award for still keeping working; in the 2010s he's produced some of his best, most diverse work. Shutter Island is a twisty B-Movie elevated by immense style, The Wolf Of Wall Street is a spiritual sequel to Goodfellas that ramps up the ridiculousness to painful levels, and even Hugo, which is little more than an effects showcase, is solid.

Wolf in particular shows that the years haven't dulled his skill; it's got all the energy of a film directed by a man half his age, but the confidence in storytelling that only making films since the 1960s can teach.
