Quentin Tarantino had a bit of a slump in the 00s, where he doubled down on his film pastiche style and couldn't quite advance it in the right way, but after Inglourious Basterds he's been back with a vengeance. In the 2010s he's gone full-on with his western obsession, telling two incredibly different stories; one a revisionist revenge tale, the other a Civil War metaphor, and both put him right back in amongst the best filmmakers around. His dialogue is sharp, his reverence admirable, but there's also a maturity backing it all up.

Django does suffer somewhat thanks to his lack of restraint - there's thirty minutes of movie after the two most interesting characters have been killed off - but The Hateful Eight is astonishing bold, big and small at the same time with a measured balance of influences from others and his own filmography.
