Adam Wingard is one of the most accomplished genre directors working today, able to replicate and subvert with equal skill. Both You're Next and The Guest started off as flashy genre riffs (home invasion and mysterious stranger respectively), but in their final acts veered sharply into more subversive areas; the former went borderline comic and the latter ditched all semblance of twisty plot for vibrant action. It's impeccable style and marked out the former short film maestro as a key talent.
He's not quite a beloved as he perhaps should be, with some dismissing his films (especially You're Next) as pale imitations. Promisingly, the hype around The Woods, his upcoming horror, is intense after an unforgettable teaser, so hopefully that (along with his work on TV show Outcast) will finally put him on the map.
