Cary Fukunaga really shows how the role of director is really changing in the modern cultural landscape. His biggest work was True Detective Season 1 - he directed all eight episodes of what is now regarded as the peak of the Golden Age - an impressive feat made all the more noteworthy given how Season 2, which he didn't have a hand in, was so poorly regarded. Of course, then he was off making Beasts Of No Nation, a haunting, sumptuous story of child soldiers that marked the first feature film to be distributed by Netflix.

He's not just some new-age maverick though, with a long history in all sorts of film and TV, as seen in 2011's Jane Eyre, a more traditional, but still incredibly unique take on a very well trodden story.
