Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut, based on the late Jonathan Larson's hit musical, is a fascinatingly playful, formally daring film about the perils of the creative process.

If you're feeling a little exhausted by all the musical movies that released this year, Tick, Tick...Boom! is perhaps the most fiercely, playfully unique of the lot.

Rolling the already semi-autobiographical source material into a wider film about Larson's life, this is an exceedingly clever and touching way to both adapt a great musical and pay firm tribute to the creative force behind it who was taken from us far too soon.

Andrew Garfield is fantastic in the lead role, and between the diverse, catchy songs and exemplary technical presentation, this is one of the better-crafted movie musicals in recent memory.
