16. Dune

Warner Bros.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune is one of the most meticulously crafted films of the year, the now-legendary filmmaker pulling off a dense, visually mesmerising adaptation of the first half of Frank Herbert's sci-fi opus.

The aesthetics and world-building are majestic enough to paper over some of its more laborious pacing and stilted emotions, ensuring Dune is guaranteed to endure as one of the most lovingly crafted blockbusters of the decade - if not ever, honestly.

With a cast clearly committed to the material far above their paychecks, it's a relief that Dune won't merely become a one-off curio, as Part Two has already been given the green light and is set to start shooting sometime next year. Phew.
