2. The Wailing
Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing tells the tale of a small, rural South Korean village rocked by the arrival of a mysterious Japanese man whose presence coincides with the outbreak of a zombie-like virus that infects its victims with murderous rage. Sitting somewhere comfortably between terrifying Asian horror and murder mystery cop movie, the film cleverly fuses elements of both Western religious superstition and Korean shamanistic folklore, and follows hapless local cop Jong-goo as he races to discover the cause of the virus, spurred on after his young daughter falls sick too.
Not only a huge success in Hong-jin’s homeland where it soon ranked as one of South Korea’s highest-grossing homegrown movies, The Wailing wowed critics at Cannes too and scored itself a not too shabby 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
